Christmas Stories

One of my favorite parts of Christmas is the books I get to read to my kids at this time of year. I LOVE Christmas books!

Raising Arrows asked for some suggestions so I'm posting mine here~

Humphrey’s First Christmas  is the Christmas story from the viewpoint of a wise man’s camel.

Bear Stays up for Christmas I love the whole Bear series. It doesn’t mention Jesus and there is a small picture of Santa filling stockings but it’s a very sweet book about friends loving and taking care of each other at Christmas. It’s very nice addition to a collection.

Mortimer’s Christmas Manger-A mouse tries to kick out the nativity statues to move in to the little stable…until he hears just who this little baby statue is.

An Angel Story by Max Lucado. It’s a read aloud or read alone for older kids, over 7 maybe. No pictures. It’s a fictional story about what goes on in the spiritual world between God, the angels and Satan as the Christmas story unfolds. It's an exciting story.

Fear Not Joseph-the story of Christmas from Joseph’s point of view.

This Is The Stable by Cynthia Cotten- a sweet rhyming book with great pictures.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas-I’m sure most people know this one but I’m adding it b/c it’s often overlooked. Though no mention of Jesus I LOVE this story’s emphasis on how “Christmas doesn’t come from a store”. Added to some Christian Christmas books, it’s great and fun.

The Gift of the Christmas Cookie  is a great book to remind kids that there are others who have very little and a nice story about the origins of Christmas Cookies.

The Crippled Lamb by Max Lucado (so worth it to get the bigger copy. Ours has a CD). This is one of my very favorite books!

Room for a Little One is a sweet, short story for young ones .

One Wintry Night by Ruth Bell Graham is a beautifully written and illustrated book. It tells of the story of Christmas where it begins: with Creation. It's on the long side so start a couple weeks before Christmas.

I'm always looking out for new ones, so if you have a favorite please leave a comment and share it.

This Harsh World, The Butterfly Effect and The End of the Story

These last few weeks have been hard to process. I feel overwhelmed with the realities of this world. The reality that this is a hard and sad, broken place. The shootings in Aurora, the continued genocide in Zimbabwe , the attacks on men standing firm in what they believe , the selling of people and the list can go on and on. I strongly believe with all that I am that we serve a Good and Merciful God. And yet in times like this I can doubt and question where is His goodness when we need it most. I'll never cease to be amazed at how my God answers me. It was all over everywhere. As I questioned and shook my fists and asked "why?" and " how could you let this be?", He gently answered me over and over again .  As I asked these questions with tears in my eyes, He reminded me of the book I had finished on the beach a few weeks ago. This man full of God given wisdom wrote: There is but one good; that is God. Everything else is good when it looks to Him and...

Choose to avoid the chaos that expectations bring. Fill the minds with truth. Remember that the only truth is what is good. Something can be accurate but still not true. Fill the house with love because they won't really remember exactly what you taught them but they will remember how it felt to be there. Fill bodies with strength.
